Manual import from text and web sources

BibDesk makes it easy to manually import references from any text source or directly from the web. In a dual view, one view shows the content of a text source or a web page. You can drag/drop or copy/paste text from the view into the table on the right, or use use handy keyboard shortcuts to directly set the fields.

Importing from PubMed and other formats

You can import bibliography information from several standard formats directly into your database using BibDesk.

Manual import from PubMed searches

BibDesk expects a file with the extension ‘.fcgi’ or ‘.ris’, or of MIME type ‘application/x-Research-Info-Systems’. If you don't know what that means, that's OK. Just do your search as usual on PubMed, and then select the settings as in the following image:

The important settings are that it should be set to Display ‘MEDLINE’ and Send to ‘File’. Then click the ‘Send to’ button, and a file will be saved to your download folder. You can then use BibDesk to open this file. If you want to, you can save it as a BibTeX file, or transfer the translated entries over into a BibTeX file that you use permanently.

Other formats

BibDesk recognizes several other formats, such as ISI Web of Science and JSTOR. You can either open a file containing bibliographies in these formats directly in BibDesk, or drop the file on a BibDesk window to add the items to an existing BibTeX database.
